Meet Bianca-Lucia Clark, our new Face of MS

A heartfelt thank you to Bianca-Lucia Clark, who has agreed to share her journey as our new Face of MS for Wellington region. The Face of MS puts a spotlight on a PwMS in our community and helps to raise MS awareness while fundraising towards provision of our Community Advisory Service around the greater Wellington region. Expect to learn more about Bianca-Lucia during this year’s MS Awareness Campaign.

Read Bianca-Lucia's story on MSNZ's Face Of MS Wellington webpage and make a donation.

The Face of MS is a national initiative that helps the regional MS societies to raise awareness and funds towards their services. Having a new Face of MS will help attract new supporters to our online fundraising page.

A big thank you to Nick Brandon, who generously shared his story as our wonderful Face of MS for the last few years.

MS Awareness Week 9 – 15 September

MS Awareness Week is fast approaching and we are looking for people to help coordinate a site or collect, especially in Wellington, Hutt Valley and the Wairarapa.

A special thank you to Carole Davey, who contacted Clive’s Chemist in Wainuiomata and arranged to collect there  between 11am and 1pm on Thursday 12 September. Thanks Carole, this will be the first time we've had a presence over the Wainuiomata Hill for a few years!

Collecting days are:

Friday 6 September - New World Hutt City

Wednesday 11 September - Wellington CBD streets near the Railway Station

Thursday 12 September - outside Clive's Chemist Wainuiomata 11-1pm, Woolworths Queen St Upper Hutt

Friday 13 September - New World Wellington City (Chaffers), New World Thorndon, New World Porirua, New World Waikanae & New World Silverstream, Pak'nSave Petone, Woolworths Russell St Upper Hutt

We will be running another digital campaign this year too. Last year's digital campaign raised 25% of the total for WMS, and we are hoping to raise even more this year.

If you can help please contact Suzie or Lacey.

The Community Advisory Service Changes

The Community Advisory Service is currently a By-Request Service in the Hutt and Wairarapa for the time-being, while Lacey Reedy is the society’s only Community Advisor. Lacey works on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and some Fridays.

Recruitment to two vacant Community Advisor positions is underway. You can find out more about the job advertisement here. One vacancy arose after Jo Dean resigned in July while the other vacancy had been carried for 18 months since Shona left.

We thank Jo Dean for her work in the Lead Community Advisor position and wish her all the best for the future.

Grants and donations

Our thanks to Nikau Foundation, The Jack Jeff’s Trust and COGS Hutt Valley and Wairarapa for continuing to support our important mahi with generous grant funding.

A special thanks to our wonderful Patron Professor Anne La Flamme for her generous donation too.

A thank you to Brett from Trikn Tours, who raised a wonderful $445 for WMS at the Wellington Better Home and Living Show in May. You can see some photos of Brett and his amazing machine on Instagram.

The Pub Quiz at Speights Alehouse to mark MS Awareness Day on 30 May was great fun and raised $825 to support our work. You can read more and see photos on the website here.

Brain Health Seminar Recordings

Disability Support Changes

A recording of MSNZ's recent Brain Health Seminar with Professor Helmut Butzkueven is now available. If you haven’t had a chance to watch it yet – you’re in for a treat.

Please share the recording with anyone who would like it. Just remember to copy and paste the information into a new email, or send them the link to the website:

Changes to the way disability support is managed by Government were announced on Thursday 15 August. Click here to read the Minister's press release.

Many in the disabled community are disappointed at the news. Click here to read some of their comments here on the Radio New Zealand website.

Like you, we will do our best to stay across developments in the sector.

Please get in touch if our support might be useful at this challenging time.
